The Ancient Maya is a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of knowledge of Maya studies. In fact, I know several scholars who habitually turn to The Ancient Maya to glean the current consensus in Maya studies, before turning to write a publication or report. The book provides clear overviews of the ancient Maya’s natural environment.

The Maya - a powerful pre-Colombian civilization who reached their cultural zenith around A.D. before falling into steep decline - were literate and had books, written in a complex language including pictograms, glyphs, and phonetic representations.

A Maya book is referred to as a codex (plural: codices). The codices were painted onto a paper made of bark. Maya codices (singular codex) are folding books written by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Maya hieroglyphic script on Mesoamerican bark paper.

The folding books are the products of professional scribes working under the patronage of deities such as the Tonsured Maize God and the Howler Monkey Gods.

Most of the codices were destroyed by conquistadors and Catholic. My preliminary transcriptions and analyses of the inscriptions were presented in raw form a number of years ago at the Maya Meetings at UT-Austin; the current book project will present this data in a more analytical and interpretive way, looking at architecture, landscape, art and narrative in terms of a holistic design.

Maya inscriptions were most often written in columns two glyphs wide, with each successive pair of columns read left to right, top to bottom. Maya texts were usually written in blocks arranged in columns two blocks wide, with each block corresponding to a noun or verb ges: Mayan languages.
